Deputies Recover Stolen Vehicle and Apprehend Wanted Suspect Following Foot Pursuit
SYRACUSE, NY — On the evening of March 10, 2026, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputies successfully recovered a stolen vehicle and apprehended three individuals, including a male suspect with active warrants who attempted to flee on foot.
At approximately 6:00 PM, Deputies patrolling near the Farmers Market on Park Street observed a yellow Penske box truck with an Indiana registration. Recognizing the vehicle from prior alerts as an active stolen vehicle from the Town of DeWitt, deputies initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Park Street and Hiawatha Boulevard.
The Traffic Stop and Initial Detentions
The vehicle was stopped without incident. The driver, Miranda Vogel, and the passenger, Hollie Payne, were detained at the scene. During the investigation, the occupants indicated that a third associate, Steven Smith, was in the immediate vicinity.
Foot Pursuit and Apprehension
Deputies spotted Smith walking briskly away from the area. Upon making eye contact with law enforcement, Smith fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, deputies located Smith hiding inside a tent at a homeless encampment near North Salina Street and Hiawatha Boulevard.
Charges and Court Information
The Town of DeWitt Police Department responded to the scene to process the vehicle. The following actions were taken:

Miranda Vogel, 40, from Syracuse & Hollie Payne, 48, from Syracuse: Both were issued appearance tickets for Misdemeanor unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Steven Smith, 42, from Fulton: Issued an appearance ticket for misdemeanor Obstructing Governmental administration 2nd. Additionally, Smith was booked into the Onondaga County Justice Center on his outstanding warrants from the City of Syracuse and the Town of Dewitt.
