Update: Fatal Erie Blvd. crash

Today, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to stop a reported stolen minivan on Avery Avenue in the City of Syracuse. The driver failed to comply and continued eastbound on West Genesee Street before turning onto Erie Boulevard. While fleeing from deputies, the driver failed to negotiate a curve and struck a telephone pole near 1008 Erie Boulevard.
A female passenger was ejected from the vehicle. The male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The female passenger was transported to Upstate University Hospital with minor injuries. The identity of the driver is pending notification.
This investigation has been turned over to the New York State Attorney General’s Office. All inquiries regarding this incident should be directed to the Attorney General’s Office. Erie Boulevard has since reopened to traffic.
