It is with profound sadness that the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of Judge Paul Carey, 76, of Liverpool.
Judge Carey began his distinguished career with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, where he made a lasting impact that continues to be felt today. He was instrumental in establishing the Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit and proudly served as its very first K-9 handler, a role he held close to his heart. Judge Carey was especially proud of his service alongside his K-9 partner, Seamus, and of helping lay the foundation for a unit that remains vital to our operations.
Following his retirement from the Sheriff’s Office, Judge Carey went on to become a highly respected attorney throughout Central New York. He later continued his lifelong commitment to public service as a judge for the Town of Salina, earning the admiration and respect of colleagues and community members alike for his integrity, dedication, and fairness.
Sheriff Toby Shelley, along with the men and women of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, extend our deepest condolences to Judge Carey’s family, friends, and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time, as we honor and remember a man whose service and legacy will not be forgotten.
