Syracuse, NY – On Thursday, September 11, 2025, at approximately 1:00 p.m., an inmate at the Onondaga County Justice Center violently attacked two supervising sergeants following a rules violation.
Inmate Zhamir Wright, 29, was directed to remove items in his cell that were obstructing visibility into the room. When informed that his actions violated facility policy, Wright became combative. During the altercation, Wright placed his arm around one of the sergeant’s neck in a strangulation hold and proceeded to bite him. Responding staff to the attack were able to subdue I/I Wright, and he was arrested for the assault by the Sheriff’s Office Detectives.
The injured sergeant was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and later released.
As a result of the attack, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office has charged Wright with the following offenses:

PL 120.05 (07) – Assault in the Second Degree (While Confined in a Correctional Facility), D Felony

PL 121.12 – Strangulation in the Second Degree, D Felony

PL 120.05 (03) – Assault in the Second Degree, D Felony
Sheriff Toby Shelley stated:
“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers correctional staff face every day while carrying out their duties. Deputies and supervisors working inside our jails manage difficult and often volatile situations to keep both staff and incarcerated individuals safe. Their professionalism and courage in the face of danger are commendable, and we are grateful that our sergeant was able to return home after receiving treatment.”
