Syracuse, Onondaga County NY, September 30 , 2025— Site-based assessor(s) from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will arrive October 6, 2025 to examine all aspects of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services, Sheriff Tobias Shelley announced today.
Verification by the assessor(s) that Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office meets the Commission’s comprehensive state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation—a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence, he said. The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office has to comply with 163 standards in order to gain accredited status, Sheriff Tobias Shelley said. The accreditation process promotes continuous improvement and accountability within the Sheriff’s Office. While enhancing professionalism, it is essential to establish a framework for best policy, best practices, and operational standards.
Accreditation is for four years, during which the agency must submit agency status reports and participate in annual remote web-based assessments attesting continued compliance with the standards.
