Jessica Root Becomes First Graduate of Jamesville Correctional Facility’s New Sewing Program

Jamesville, NY – February 26, 2025 – The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office proudly announces that Jessica Root, an incarcerated individual at the Jamesville Correctional Facility, is the first graduate of the newly created sewing program. She successfully completed the course, demonstrating proficiency in sewing skills that will benefit both the facility and the community.
This innovative program, introduced by Sheriff Shelley, aims to equip incarcerated individuals with valuable skills while also maintaining the uniforms worn daily by Sheriff’s Deputies. By handling uniform repairs in-house, the program significantly reduces costs for taxpayers, eliminating the need for outside vendors to service over 600 personnel.
Beyond cost savings, the program provides participants with a practical skill set that enhances employment opportunities upon release. Graduates of the program will be better positioned to secure jobs in the textile industry or related fields, fostering successful reintegration into society.
Instructor Vonda Bisha expressed her pride in Jessica Root’s achievement, stating, “Jessica has shown great dedication and skill throughout the course. I wish her the best as she prepares for her next chapter.”
Sheriff Shelley has prioritized the reintroduction of educational and vocational programs within the correctional facility. He believes that providing individuals with valuable skills during incarceration not only aids their adaptation to confinement but also empowers them to become productive members of society upon release
