The Onondaga Sheriff’s Office strives for a positive relationship with the community it serves. The Job Shadowing/Mentoring Program allows for the Office member and selected members of the community to build a mutual understanding regarding the significant duties and responsibilities of an Onondaga County Sheriff’s Member. This programs objective is to create transparency and improve relationships by familiarizing participant knowledge and understanding of the complexities and nature of law enforcement work to include Civil, Correction, Custody, and Police operations.
Eligibility & Requirements
The Job Shadowing / Mentoring Program is geared for approved members of the public, such as:
- High School Students who are currently a qualified senior in an Onondaga County based High School;
- Matriculated College students, including Sheriff’s Office interns, that are in Criminal Justice or related programs;
- Students enrolled in a NYSED-recognized Career and Technical Education Work Experience Program (i.e. B.O.C.E.S or New Visions)
- Family members of current Sheriff’s Office members who meet the eligibility requirements;
- Candidates and/or current employees of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office for familiarization purposes;
- Any other person as allowed by the Sheriff or Designee
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old, unless enrolled in B.O.C.E.S / New Visions class or a current high school senior that is 16 years of age or older is required;
- Must agree to and pass a criminal history check;
- Must be of good moral character
Application Process
Applicant must complete the Job Shadowing/Mentoring Application along with Background and Waiver of Liability Form. All three forms are processed and a decision is made based on the information gathered whether an applicant is approved to participate. The applicants are notified as to whether or not they are qualified to participate. Forms are available by clicking on the links below.

Justice Center Tour
Regular monthly public tours will be scheduled for the 2nd Wednesday of each month and will commence at 6:30 P.M.
